About the Author:
C. L. G. MARTIN'¬?s own Scandinavian heritage served as inspiration for UFF DA! After living many years in Wisconsin, Cathy has now returned to her native Minnesota, where she resides with her husband, Jerry, in Big Lake. This is her sixth picturebook.
UFF DA! is RICHARD CLARK'¬?s first children'¬?s book after a long career as an editorial illustrator. Richard lives with his wife Susan in Brooklyn, New York.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 3–Timmer Bergenborgstrom and his extended family take on a real "fixer-upper" in this energetic story. As each new problem arises in the neglected house, Grampie Gustie cries "Uff da!" and reaches for the phone to call for help. The relatives offer their myriad skills: replacing windows, fixing plumbing, braiding rag rugs, and patching the leaky roof. The boy offers to help with each job, but is told again and again that he's too young. Disappointed, he retreats to his orderly room. Eventually, the house proves too small for so many people; arguments ensue, and onomatopoeic words erupt as family members bump into one another rushing to the dinner table. This time Timmer acts before offering to help. He emerges from his room with directional signs that indicate "Yield," "Keep Right," "One Way," etc., and order is restored. The colorful language has a Scandinavian flair. The painterly, sometimes slightly surreal illustrations are rendered in mixed media and often make use of unique perspectives. Looking down and zooming in on the dilapidated house, readers are thrust into the interior commotion on the opening page. The artwork reflects the chaos generated by too many people in these cramped quarters, creating an active and sometimes frenetic atmosphere. This entertaining tale will assure readers that the youngest family member is not necessarily too little to solve big problems.–Marian Creamer, Children's Literature Alive, Portland, OR
