Grade 4-8–In their introduction, the authors explain that during middle school, girls tend to lose interest in science or to stop believing in their abilities. Their remedy for the situation is a resource that makes the subject fun and explains its functions in everyday life. Included are chapters on earth science, biology, computer science, botany, ecology, chemistry, astronomy, physics, and engineering. Each one provides a brief introduction to the discipline, describes related careers, offers a quiz to gauge interest, and suggests experiments. The strongest feature of the book is the inclusion of one- to three-page biographies of female scientists, complete with photos. There are also short interviews with children ages nine and up about why they love these various areas of study. While the black-and-white cartoons depict a variety of races, the photos of the girls interviewed indicate that most are Caucasian. The writing is clear and upbeat. A lengthy, annotated list of Web sites is included. This simple, nonthreatening overview of many scientific fields just might grab the attention of girls on the brink of losing interest.–Laura Younkin, Ballard High School, Louisville, KY
