Gr. 1-3. These books in the Body in Action series offer younger readers basic introductions to the human body. Eating discusses why people need to eat, the digestive system, and smelling, tasting, and chewing. The book uses foods such as potatoes, chicken, and fruits and vegetables to explain how the body uses carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, respectively. Food allergies and tips for healthy eating are also covered. Moving explains how parts of the body work when the body is engaged in movements such as jumping and running. Powell also discusses how energy is expended during movement and how movement sometimes causes injury to the body. Both books are abundantly illustrated with color photographs of children demonstrating what the text explains as well as informative diagrams. Words defined in a glossary appear in boldface in the text. Suggestions for further reading are also included. Attractively designed, sensibly organized, and informative, these are fine choices to introduce young children to the respective subjects. Ed Sullivan
