From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2—In each of these slight introductions, a page with widely spaced lines of large-print text alternates with a color photo; most depict one or more representative invertebrates in their natural habitat. Each book briefly describes a few of the featured animals' major physical and behavioral characteristics, ecological importance, etc. Butterflies also outlines the insects' life cycle. Each book concludes with directions for a simple observational activity. A few miscellaneous facts also appear in red print, under the half-page photos. All three books are flawed by oversimplification and the omission of important facts. Wimmer states that bees called drones help the queen make baby bees but fails to explain that drones are males and that their "help" involves mating with the queen. Butterflies only gives a partial description of the insects' life cycle, stating that a butterfly starts out as a caterpillar, while omitting the first stage of its development-the egg from which the caterpillar hatches. Spiders (its inclusion in a series ostensibly devoted to insects is puzzling) is misleading when it states that the arachnids eat plants. All spiders are predators and plants are not part of a typical diet; only a few species of daddy longlegs also eat vegetable material. More substantial and better-written introductions to these invertebrates include Anne Rockwell's Honey in a Hive (HarperTrophy, 2005), Louse Spilsbury's Butterfly (Heinemann Library, 2005), and Sandra Markle's Spiders: Biggest! Littlest! (Boyds Mills, 2004).—Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
