A look at eagles, including their habitats, physical characteristics such as their keratinous beaks, behaviors, relationships with humans, and admired status in the world today.

As if the full-bleed National Geographic–worthy photos aren’t enough of a hook, the books in the Living Wild series each start off with a dramatic bang. Eagles begins with a hunt sequence, then delves into why the spectacular birds of prey have been “viewed as symbols of strength and dignity” in nearly every corner of the earth. Each book lucidly discusses conservation and the animals’ often tenuous relationship with humans. The layout is uniformly simple but effective, constructed with a nice balance of main text for the report writers, smaller chunks of esoterica for browsers, and, again, those killer photos. All in all, upper-echelon animal books for middle-grade researchers. Grades 5-8. --Ian Chipman
