Lou Ann Schraffenberger, MBA, RHIA, CCS, is the manager of clinical data in the Clinical Quality Improvement Department of Advocate Health Care in Oak Brook, Illinois. Her position is dedicated to systemwide health information management (HIM) and clinical data projects, clinical coding education, data quality improvement, and coding compliance issues. Prior to her current position, Lou Ann served as director of hospital health record departments, director of AHIMA's Professional Practice Division, and a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Lou Ann's education experience ranges from seminar leader to health information administration program faculty member and continuing education instructor at community colleges. She also has served as a consultant for clinical coding projects with hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, physicians, and medical group practices. Lou Ann has been active in national, state, and local HIM associations. Lou Ann was aw! arded the first AHIMA Volunteer Award in 1997. She currently serves as the chair of the Society for Clinical Coding and is a member of the AHIMA Council on Certification's Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Examination Construction Committee.
