Environmental educator Miché introduces children to nature by referring to it as a patchwork quilt of different habitats and by comparing the interdependency of individual plants and animals to a patchwork quilt of species within a habitat. Individual double-page spreads discuss specific habitats as well as concepts such as adaptations, biodiversity, environmentalists, food webs, and survival mechanisms. Effective in the text, the quilt metaphor is carried out beautifully in the illustrations, which appear to be ink drawings with watercolors. Each double-page spread creates a new pattern of geometric shapes, mainly rectangles and triangles, and within each is a picture of an animal living in that ecosystem. The larger ones show broader scenes within the habitat, and the occasional borders repeat related visual details in decorative patterns.
