About the Author

Nanos Valaoritis is among the most celebrated of contemporary Greek poets. Born in Switzerland but of Greek descent, Valaoritis was prominent among Surrealist poets under Andre Breton before moving to the United States. Formerly a professor of literature at San Francisco State University, he currently lives in Greece. Thanasis Maskaleris is the Kazantzakis Chair Research Professor emeritus of classics, comparative literature, and creative writing, and the director emeritus of the Center for Modern Greek Studies at San Francisco State University. A well-known poet as well as a translator, he is the author of Kostis Palamas and the co-translator of Russia by Nikos Kazantzakis.
