Born in Germany, Bruno Balke, PhD, MD, immigrated to the United States in 1950 where he was recruited by the US Air Force School of Aviation Medicine. His work there contributed greatly to our understanding of aerospace medicine and human adaptation to space travel. From 1960 to 1964, he served as medical officer and chief of the Biodynamics Branch at the Federal Aviation Agency's Civil Aeromedical Research Institute. From 1964 until 1973, Dr. Balke held a joint appointment as professor in physical education and physiology at the University of Wisconsin, where he founded the School of Education's doctoral program in exercise physiology and its Biodynamics Laboratory. He was the president of the American College of Sports Medicine from 1965-1966 and became the first editor of the Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. The well-known "Balke Protocol" is a result of his work with heart patients who were tested on the treadmill and then guided through a program of exercise. Dr. Balke's pioneering work is part of the foundation of fitness assessment and exercise prescription and has saved and enriched the lives of thousands of people around the world.
