Illustrated by K.L. Darnell
Poetic author Alice Ann Miller brings sentiment and importance to the treasures a child holds dear as he ever so cautiously shares them with his mother:
"It's buried deep and very safe. I have it in my special place. Come along, it's through this door."
Combining perspective with intricate detail and fanciful style, artist Kate Darnell allows us to envision our own treasures and to experience sharing them with those we love: "A yellow sock, my lucky rock...my favorite car, my cricket jar."

"Treasures of the Heart by Alice Ann Miller is all about the treasures we keep, things that are special to us that may appear perfectly ordinary or even useless to the rest of the world. The book is filled with whimsical drawings by K.L. Darnell, and is written by Miller in verse, adding importance to everyday ?treasures?: a lucky rock, a cricket jar, a bird?s nest, a paper airplane, a rubber band, genuine rabbit hair. For everything saved, none of it bought in a store, there is a story to tell. The true treasures, Miller writes, are not found on a pirate?s ship, but inside the human heart."

"A child shares the treasures he keeps under his bed in this gentle story in which mom has to be convinced the area isn?t a mess. ?A yellow sock, my lucky rock, let?s see what you can find. My favorite car, my cricket jar, a two-year-old bird?s nest.? This is sure to touch a chord with kids learning to love their personal stuff."

PreSchool-Grade 1-A little boy takes his mother's hand and leads her to his bedroom, where he shows her the precious items under his bed, including a bit of fluff, a peach pit, his cricket jar, a sock, etc. He tells her, "I wanted you to see my stuff/and have fun with it, too./You wouldn't want to break my heart/and throw it out-/Mom? Would you?" The soft, pastel spreads depict the collection on the floor in close-up detail, with a fuzzy caterpillar crawling somewhere in each picture. Only the hands and feet of the child and mother are shown. This quiet, simple book is marred by a rhyming text that does not easily scan, but the subject is likely to appeal to children.
