In his tantalizing debut novel, John Fusco marvelously traces the unforgettable trajectory of twelve-year-old Nunzio Paradiso's last summer of innocence. To Kill a Mockingbird depicted such a summer-the last unfettered, wondrous season of youth.

Each new wreck towed into Paradise Salvage-where the ferocious crusher presides with its power to reduce luxury automobiles into heaps of twisted metal-is a desultory gift from Fortune. Sometimes it's a handful of loose change or an old copy of Vue magazine with a Betty Page centerfold under the front seat, but on a hot summer day in 1979, in the trunk of an abandoned Pontiac, Nunzio uncovers a secret that will change his life.

In the blink of an eye, all evidence is lost to the crusher, and only his older brother Danny Boy believes Nunzio's story. Enlisting the help of his father's renegade cousin, an ex-cop with a dark history of his own, he embarks on a bizarre and dangerous journey.

A story of innocence lost and justice found, of ambition frustrated and dreams realized, and the difference between generations of a family struggling to reconcile the traditions of the past with the demands of the present, Paradise Salvage glows with heart and marks the debut of a gifted storyteller.

About the Author:
Prior to becoming an award-winning screenwriter, John Fusco left high school to work variously as a factory machinist, sawmill hand, motorcycle seat upholsterer, and travelling blues musician. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he has written and produced eight major motion pictures, including Thunderheart and Young Guns. His is currently in pre-production on his next screenplay, Rebels, which will be directed by Barry Levinson in Fall of 2001, and his animated screenplay, Spirit, voiced by Robert Redford, will be released for Thanksgiving 2001. He lives with his wife and son on their stud farm in Vermont.
From AudioFile:
Brian Emerson has an odd sort of talent: He narrates with the flat tone of a public service announcer, but when reading lines of dialogue, his voice--and the characters he embodies--comes alive. He tells the story of Nuncio Paradiso, in the summer of his 12th year, when he discovers a body in the trunk of an old Pontiac in his father's junkyard. The story, set in a working-class Connecticut town in 1979, brims with suspense, adventure, and Italian-American culture as Nuncio and his older brother must face incredulous adults, corrupt officials, violence, death, and Italian superstitions.
