An intimate and unvarnished view of Winston Churchill at his best.

At the outset of the Second World War, John Colville, then a young diplomat, was sent from the Foreign Office to Number 10 Downing Street. For nine of the next sixteen years, he served three prime ministers, much of that time as private secretary to Winston Churchill. At Churchill's side during the war, Colville experienced the defeat of France, the Battle of Britain, and the turn of Allied fortunes in North Africa and then in Europe. His account takes us to the Central War Room and Chequers, where late at night Colville listened to Churchill's private conversations with his closest wartime aides, General Ismay, Brendan Bracken, Lord Cherwell, Beaverbrook, and other British civilian and military leaders. (6 x 9, 800 pages, b&w photos)
"There is no better portrait of Churchill at the height of his powers."
-Drew Middleton, The New York Times Book Review
"An unending feast of opinions, revelations, and mementos of some of England's finest (and less than fine) days."
"This witty, graceful, irreverent, and compulsively readable diary by Winston Churchill's private wartime secretary throws fascinating new light on the great British leader and on the inner history of the Second World War." -Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.
