Synopsis
In addressing many of the disturbing trends associated with today's youth - among them, alarming increases in drug use, suicide, and violence - Dr. Jackard ackowledges that recognition of these problems is the first step toward improving conditions. He also cites another pothole adults fall into in dealing with the problems of today's youth: being politically correct. The error in this, says Dr. Jackard, is that the funds spent on politically correct prisons and youth detention centers could be better spent on training educators who must deal with these troubled young people.
Through specific examples, exercises, and insights gained from more than 25 years as a principal and director of an alternative education high school, Dr. Jackard offers adults sound advice in dealing with these young people. His is not, as he says,..."a plea for going soft." It is, rather, "...a plea for filtering compassion, understanding and acceptance into whatever standards of discipline and responsible action is required." This book offers good, sound advice for anyone interested in or involved with the young people of the 21st Century.
