The origin of Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft stems from the time when the author was appointed part-time professor in the Aerospace Faculty of Delft University of Technology. At the time his main activities were those of leading the departments of Aerodynamics, Performance and Preliminary Design at Fokker Aircraft Company. The groundwork for this book started in 1987 as a series of lecture notes consisting mainly of pictorial material with a minimum of English explanatory text. After the demise of Fokker in 1996 one feared that interest in aeronautical engineering would strongly diminish. As a result of this, the course was discontinued and the relationship between the author and the faculty came to an end. Two years later the situation was reappraised, and the interest in aeronautical engineering remained, so the course was reinstated with a former Fokker colleague Ronald Slingerland as lecturer. The lecture notes from these courses form the foundation of this publication.

''Good value for the amount of information it contains. Greatly recommended.''
- A.H. Fraser-Mitchel, The Aeronautical Journal
''Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft'' provides a very comprehensive and absolutely solid insight into the various aspects of modern aircraft design. Ed Obert has been lecturing for a long period of time. Utilizing his extensive experience he developed a very clear way of formulating, describing and presenting this rich material collected over many years.''
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Szodruch, Executive Board, German Aerospace Center
''The author has done an outstanding job of identifying the critical aerodynamic problems encountered in the design of modern transport aircraft. To this reviewer's knowledge there is no comparable book available that presents such a wealth of actual information related to the subject of transport aircraft aerodynamic design.''
- Roger D. Schaufele, V.P. Engineering (retired), Douglas Aircraft Co.
''A very comprehensive work containing much valuable information on aircraft design in the US and Europe over the last 50 years. The book covers all the major elements which play a role in the design of an aircraft. Very valuable information for all engineers, trying to understand the physical flow problems, which have to be understood for each new practical aircraft concept.'' --- Prof. Dr. Dieter Schmitt, TU Munchen / Airbus Industry (retired)
