Planners, economists and lawyers shed light on aspects of non-financial compensation planning instruments in this collection of papers from the February 2007 and February 2008 conferences of the International Academic Association on Planning, Law and Property Rights, and from the June 2007 conference held by the European Network for Housing Research. Beginning chapters introduce a framework for comparative analysis of non-financial compensation instruments, and explain concepts of non-financial compensation as used in spatial planning. Case studies offer a comparison of the use of several types of market-oriented planning instruments (especially transferable development rights, or TDRs) in six countries: Japan, Spain, Korea, Italy, the US, and the Netherlands. The concluding chapters look at these instruments from economic, legal, and spatial perspectives. There is no subject index.
