The Introduction to Local Area Networks (LAN) explains the concepts, technologies, components, and protocols used in local area networking environments. Students will learn about popular LAN protocols, such as the versions of Ethernet and its various types and speeds. This course also introduces network operating systems concepts and their network configuration and troubleshooting tools. This explains how computers work together in both peer-to-peer and client/server networks, and the principles of network design as they apply to the use of hubs, switches, and routers to optimize network traffic. Students will also explore essential elements of wireless LAN technologies, including IEEE 802.11a, b, g, and n. Upon completion of this course, students should have a solid understanding of fundamental LAN operation concepts.
