"He was one of the earth's oddlings--
one of the wandering few
who deny restraint and scorn inhibition.
His life was a quest
for the new and the fresh.
Beauty was a dream.
He pursued his dream into
desert solitudes--
there with the singing wind to chant
his final song."
--Hugh Lacy in On Desert Trails

Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty Edited by W. L. Rusho, with an introduction by John Nichols and an afterword by Edward Abbey & Wilderness Journals of Everett Ruess Edited and with an introduction by W. L. Rusho Everett Ruess --a bold teenage adventureer, artist, and writer, studied and lived with Edward Weston, Maynard Dixon, and Dorothea Lange. He traded prints with Ansel Adams. He tramped around the Sierra Nevada, the California coast, and the desert wilderness of the Southwest between the ages of 16 and 20, pursuing his dream of ultimate beauty and oneness with nature. Then in November 1934, at age twenty, he mysteriously vanished into the barren Utah desert. This search for ultimate beauty and adventure is chronicled in two books joined in this volume; A Vagabond for Beauty is a remarkable collection of letters to friends and family written during his wanderings; Wilderness Journals of Everett Ruess excerpts passages from Everett's only existing journals--for 1932 and 1933. These journals were his companions, a place where he confided his joys, regrets, complaints, and aspirations, as well as some exciting adventures. They also provide insight into Everett's deeper feelings toward the complexities and beauty of life.
