Introduction

Often while fishing in a lake or stream, eyeing the diversity of life around me, I am reminded of man's origins and of our link to these simpler aquatic life forms. I believe this is the reason that we are drawn back to the water time after time.

Somewhere within us all is the genetic memory of the first life, formed after the earth's cooling some billions of years ago as the giant bodies of water pooled across the land. In time, a giant meteor slammed into the earth, carrying minerals that would eventually and miraculously combine to make life. First, tiny-celled microbes emerged; then, as the power of life surged forward, more powerful beings emerged, this time with strong backs and fins that allowed for exceptional movement and agility. After millions of years, our finned friends slithered onto land and eventually transformed themselves into an almost infinity of living creatures we could never have imagined in our wildest dreams.
