The time was September 21, 1953. The third baby boy was born. The one before him didn’t survive. Other than that tragedy, this baby was born as normal as could be. John was about five years old when he approached his mother and said, "Mom, who is God?"
The question caught his mother off-guard. She’d never before had a deep discussion with John about God. As she gained her composure, she went and got a King James Version of the Bible. John climbed upon his mother’s lap and stared deeply into her eyes. It made her a little nervous. A strange sensation came over her. It was as though John’s curious baby brown eyes had put her in a trance. She began to read to him. She could feel something special about John.
As time passed, John could tell there was something different about him. It wasn’t to say that he felt he was better than anyone else. He participated in the normal childhood games and sports. In fact, he was very good at what ever he did. Even though John excelled in whatever he put his mind to, he felt compassion towards the people who were less fortunate than he. At times, John wondered why he was so compassionate towards other people. John became curious to know how he was able to look into a person’s eyes and be able to tell whether a person was good or bad. At times, John wondered why he had an urge to know who God was.
As time passed, and as John grew older into adulthood, he began to notice that the children of the world were dying at a rapid rate. It made him wonder why. John believed that nothing happens by chance, and that there was a reason for everything. That is why he felt the need to tell this story.
