This set is an updated and revised edition of Encyclopedia of Genetics (2004) and the most recent addition to the Salem Health series. It has been expanded to three volumes and is intended to provide information for a broad audience, including nonspecialists. The set features 455 signed entries arranged alphabetically. Of the 455 entries, 256 entries are newly added and the rest of the entries were reedited and had their bibliographies updated. The subjects covered include all aspects of genetics, such as diseases, biology, genetic engineering, social issues, and more. The entries range in length from two to six pages. All entries begin with a listing of the category under which the topic falls. Articles covering diseases and syndromes include such information as definition, risk factors, etiology and genetics, symptoms, screening and diagnosis, treatment and therapy, and prevention and outcomes. For other types of articles, essays are preceded by a brief summary of the significance of the topic and definitions of key terms. All of the entries conclude with cross-references and further readings as well as a list of Web sites to examine for further information. Black-and-white photographs and illustrations are featured throughout the set. Volume 1 includes a listing of the contributors and their affiliations. A complete listing of contents is provided at the start of each volume, and each concludes with a comprehensive index. The final volume includes a “Biographical Dictionary of Important Geneticists,” a listing of “Nobel Prizes for Discoveries in Genetics,” and a “Time Line of Major Developments in Genetics” in addition to a glossary, a bibliography, a list of Web sites, a category index, a personages index, and a subject index. The articles in this welcome update should meet the needs of the intended audience. For purchasers, complimentary access to the online version is available through the Salem Health database. Recommended for consumer-health collections. --Maren Ostergard
