Review:
Growers are being offered the new 425-page, potato production textbook-sized volume written and compiled by Drs. Jeffrey Stark and Stephen L. Love of the University of Idaho. Every copy of the book includes a bonus CD-ROM with a full copy of the book in PDF format. The electronic version of the book has special search capabilities. There are embedded links in the PDF file that enable quick access to information in the book. The CD-ROM also contains PDF copies of other potation science publications from the University of Idaho's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. A total of 28 other University of Idaho and ARS scientists and potato specialists wrote segments of the book. The authors have been getting dozens of compliments on the work. Already the book has proven itself invaluable. For example, an Idaho Falls fresh-pack employee used the book to gather information on potato quality to complete a successful bid for a large contract. After the event, he told Love that "Everyone in the potato industry ought to have a copy of this book." A North Dakota teacher in an e-mail complimented the authors. "I just love this book and the CD is great, too. I think the students should have as much fun as I have had." "The handbook is a real tribute to the dedication of these potato scientists. They did an outstanding job. The book should be one of the most practical hands-on production systems books in the the United States," a Potato Grower magazine editor stated. It is probably the most comprehensive, modern-day potato production handbook available. --Potato Grower magazine, January 2004, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 92-93.
