Lanoskza (international economic relations, U. of Windsor, Canada) analyzes the World Trade Organization's impact on the world trading system. He follows three interrelated themes that focus in turn on the WTO as a response to the global geopolitical and socioeconomic transformations that begin in the late 1980s; the WTO as an unfinished project, especially when it comes to decision-making processes; and shifting power relations within the international trade system. He approaches the topic from the theoretical perspective of the institutionalist interdependence approach to international relations, which investigates the WTO both as a functional outcome of interstate negotiations and as a bureaucracy with its own internal dynamics. Individual chapters provide historical background on the international trade system; discuss the main obligations and responsibilities of WTO member states, focusing on the increasing power of developing countries within the WTO system; explain and analyze agreements on anti-dumping, agriculture, textiles, and clothing; explain the General Agreement on Trade in Services; provide a history and explanation of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights; discuss efforts to expand the WTO's purview by negotiating agreements on new issues; and explore the linkages between trade and development for developing countries in the WTO system.
