Gr. 8-12. Set in an alternative ancient China where magic and kung fu are commonplace, this Hong Kong manga follows expert fighters Wind and Cloud as they search for their former master, Conquer, and face him in a showdown of martial arts prowess. In Ma's universe the World Fighting Association controls society, and nothing is more important in life than fighting superiority. When the adversaries meet, they immediately begin a frenzied and surreal battle to the death. Fans of Tetsuo Hara's Fist of the North Star series will enjoy the ultraviolent, cast-of-thousands battle sequences here (even though they occasionally border on self-parody) as well as some of Ma's elaborate artwork. However, some overly complex drawings and a sometimes awkward translation make following the story from panel to panel tricky, especially for manga novices. Despite the shortcomings, this is a satisfactory title for mature readers, and seasoned graphic novel fans will anxiously await the next installment. Carlos Orellana
