Gr 9 Up-Based on a series of articles written for Education Week, this title delves into teen suicide and the many reasons for it, profiles three teenagers who committed the act, and explores what schools and communities can do to alleviate the problem. The epidemic proportions of teen suicide are portrayed largely in statistics: more American youth die each year from suicide than cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and several other diseases combined. The suicide rate for teenagers has tripled in the past 30 years. Unfortunately, none of the sources for this information are cited. The writer's skills as a journalist are best utilized when profiling the young people who committed suicide. Interviews with friends and family of the deceased give a sense of who the person was and point out several reasons why they might have made the decision to end their lives. The table of contents is not very helpful, and the book has no bibliography or directory of organizations. Look to Karen Zeinert's Suicide: Tragic Choice (Enslow, 1999), a title written for teens instead of about them, or to Susan Kuklin's After a Suicide: Young People Speak Up (Putnam, 1994) for teens' views on grieving a suicide.
