About the Author:

Kali Stileman founded The Square Card Company in 2002, specialising in brightly-coloured sparkly greetings cards for children and young people. Her cards are sold worldwide, from Australia and Dubai to Hong Kong and Iceland. After her degree in 3D design at Brighton, Kali became a teacher of primary-age children. She then moved to Bermuda where she sold her collages and paintings through local galleries. Kali lives in a gamekeeper's cottage, deep in the woods in Wiltshire with her two children.

This kitchen-sink encyclopedia is divided into five sections: First Concepts, First Words, Can You Find?, Favorite Things, and Activities. Big, busy two-page spreads built from two-dimensional collage-style paintings are bordered by all of the various objects that kids can try to find. For example, a spread titled In the Town features pulled-out illustrations of a house, a traffic circle, a tow truck, and more, all of which are there to be discovered in the larger artwork. Some objects are weirdly outdated: the phone is a corded one, and the jack-in-the-box is hardly popular today. Meanwhile, what’s that rocket doing on a page full of trucks? On the plus side, some chapters go beyond what you would expect, including a Wild Animals spread that ropes in everything from meerkats to yaks. Once children have interacted with adults and learned the sometimes challenging vocabulary and concepts, they ought to enjoy coming back to this volume to search some more.
