Holly Swain's distinctive style of illustration can be seen in PEDRO THE BRAVE andALBERTO THE DANCING ALLIGATOR?
Kindergarten-Grade 3-Here's a simple outsmart-the-wolf story set in the American Southwest, told by a couple of Brits, no less. At a campfire one night, Pedro, a singing vaquero, plays guitar and cavorts with his trusty horse and dog-until they are joined by a timber wolf intent on devouring them. Broadley's folktale-in-verse captures the vernacular (e.g., he rhymes "idea" with "here"), and the lilting cadence lends itself to oral reading. Swain's vibrantly colored, pencil-outlined watercolors with expression-full, perspectively skewed, anthropomorphized caricatures are playful, appealing to storyteller and listener alike. The wide-mawed wolf with sharky choppers is intrigued by Pedro's willingness to make his own cannibalistic hot sauce and, of course, the cowboy's culinary cleverness helps him win the showdown, whereupon he starts strumming again. Pair Pedro with Judy Cox's The West Texas Chili Monster (BridgeWater, 1998) for a hot and hilarious regional storytime.
