About the Author:

Robert Boardman, a native of Oregon, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 as a teenager. He was assigned to C Company, First Tank Batallion, and served that unit almost to the end of the war. He took part in the Cape Gloucester, New Britian; Peleliu and Okinawa campaigns. In combat on the island of Okinawa in 1945, a Japanese bullet pierced his throat. He spent a year and a half in the hospital and left with his voice a husky whisper.

Bob went to Japan in 1951 where he married Jean Keith. In 1952 Bob was given the opportunity to go back to Okinawa where he was gravely wounded. He subsequently returned to mainland Japan in 1956, where he served as the director of the Navigator work until 1985.

Bob now lives in Seattle with his wife, Jean and serves as the chaplain to the Marine Corps Tanker's Association and the president of the Evergreen State of Washington Chapter of the First Marine Division Association. They have five children.
