Spirited Pirate Pink, daughter of the feared Redbeard, would rather go exploring than act like a lady! Searching for treasure washed in by the recent storm, Pink and her friend Juan walk to Turtle Bay, where they discover heartless Captain Snagg's ship wrecked upon the rocks. The ship is empty, but Pink finds goblets, coins, and jewels galore floating underwater!
In the depths of the bay, Pink encounters gorgeous marine life. From the octopus that wears eight strands of pearls to the angelfish and damselfish that are as shiny as doubloons and as bright as sapphires in a crown, the aquatic friends that fill Turtle Bay rival the beauty of Snagg's underwater treasure.
When Snagg and his crew suddenly return, Pink and Juan abandon ship, with Snagg in hot pursuit. With help from a friendly sea turtle and a shark that has a taste for salty old pirates, the pair return safely to their families and discover that the best part about finding treasure is that you get to share it with others.
Much like Pirate Pink, author Jan Day dreamed of adventure at sea when she was a child, even though she grew up in Cuba, Illinois. Since her youth, Day has lived in numerous states, including Hawaii, where she was chair of the Kauai Literacy Program for five years. A published writer with material appearing in both Tropic and The Bamboo Ridge Anthology, Day offers writing workshops for schoolchildren and has participated in a variety of children's publishing panels.
Illustrator Janeen I. Mason has been studying and artistically rendering aquatic subjects since 1972. Her favorite activity is adventuring, and Mason and her husband frequently sail the Gulf Stream from their home in Stuart, Florida. An active board member on the Martin County Council for the Arts, Mason has exhibited her work at galleries and art shows nationwide, and her art can be found on posters, puzzles, notecards, and apparel. This is her second picture book with Day.
Both Day and Mason are members of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
Jan Day and Janeen Mason's first collaboration, The Pirate, Pink, was selected for the Children's Book Council's Children's Choices 2002 program.
Jan Day lives in Okeechobee, Florida, surrounded by the ranches and prairies where she set her third book, Kissimmee Pete, Cracker Cow Hunter. Day is the author of The Pirate, Pink; Pirate Pink and Treasures of the Reef; and Kissimmee Pete and the Hurricane, also published by Pelican. Having published poetry and short fiction, Day offers writing workshops for schoolchildren and participates in a variety of publishing panels. Her first children's book, The Pirate, Pink, was selected for the Children's Book Council's Children's Choices 2002 program.
