J is for Jefferson and S is for signatures in this illustrated children's picture book that traces the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence and its subsequent profound impact. Unlike alphabet books that string together unrelated facts, this one actually tells the story of how our nation's founding document came to be.

"Stunning. Educational. Inspiring. Every American-especially students, teachers, librarians, and parents-should have this book!"
&mdash:Nancy I. Sanders, author of America's Black Founders
"Accurate historical details in the paintings help illuminate the period."
—School Library Journal
"The easiest way to teach American history since 1776."
—Midwest Book Review
From the Boston Tea Party in 1773 to the first reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776, this comprehensive alphabet book chronologically follows the citizens of the thirteen colonies and their fight for representation. Ruled from afar by King George III of England, the colonists rebelled against his tyranny to declare a new nation.
Through historical descriptions, character profiles, and engaging artwork, young readers will learn how America achieved its freedom. As the Americans march toward liberty, author Catherine L. Osornio guides children through C is for Continental Congress, which was formed to defend the rights of the colonists, to R is for Revolution, which brought about a change in government. The ringing of bells and the blasting of cannons accompany the Declaration's completion as the citizens of America announce their right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Catherine L. Osornio assisted in developing a reading program for Downey Child Care Center, targeting second through sixth graders. She has written more than sixty short stories for the program. Actively involved in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, Osornio has contributed articles to Clubhouse Jr. and Discovery Years, both Focus on the Family publications, and was a columnist for Crossmap.com.
Layne Johnson considers illustrating children's books an adventure and has completed more than twenty titles, including Pelican's The Declaration of Independence from A to Z. Johnson visited many of the sites in Oahu to make this story come to life. His vibrant paintings give depth to the story and invite the reader to enter into the writer's world. Johnson has earned several honors, including the Western Heritage Award and the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal Award, and is also a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. A native Texan, Johnson makes his home in Houston.
