Reviews

Gr. 5-8. From the Lucent Library of Science and Technology comes this volume that smartly begins with a reference to Star Trek's Holodeck, which enabled the crew of the Enterprise to enter any landscape imagination forged. This nod to pop culture provides an easy introduction to virtual reality, a three-dimensional, interactive computer environment that changes in real time. The evolution and the potential of this technology are explained in terms simple enough for most to understand and intriguing enough to keep budding scientists interested. The book's strongest suit, however, is its discussion of the effects VR will have as it becomes more prevalent. Will people withdraw from their real lives to create better ones online? Will shared realities raise human consciousness? Unfortunately, this exciting information is presented in a flat, gray format, punctuated with dull photos. Other books in the series focus on bacteria and viruses, and energy alternatives. Ilene Cooper
