Oakes's death makes Pinto's presence indispensable due to hostile Commanches and a vicious band of outlaws roaming the region. The final shootout makes for a thrilling climax to this well-crafted western. Wisler's attention to the Texan vernacular and Lowery's nightmares enrich the story's authenticity. Readers see that Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome is but a new name for an old affliction. Wisler endears his Lamouresque lead character to audiences by imbuing him with all the characteristics of a hero: he is moral, polite, humble, down-to-earth, and bothers no one unless his or the safety of the defenseless is threatened. Readers will feel the man's heart begin to soften as the family shows him love.
