Synopsis

About the Author:

Karen Roosa is also the author of Beach Day, which was named a Bank Street Best Children's Book of the Year. She lives with in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Julie Fortenberry is a fine artist and illustrator, with a MFA from Hunter College. Her abstract paintings have been exhibited in galleries in New York City, and her illustrations have appeared in Highlights High Five magazine. She lives in Westchester County, New York.

This holiday picture book follows a toddler as she experiences the festive sights and sounds of a Fourth of July celebration. From a kid’s-eye view, the opening spread shows a toddler clinging to Dad’s trousers in a row of legs, waiting for the parade. Bursting with movement, the spirited and free-flowing watercolors capture cartwheeling gymnasts and marching scout troups; simple line strokes convey toes tapping and horns blaring. Uncle Sam on stilts gives the child a red balloon, which drifts off all too quickly, but the child’s sadness is short-lived. At a midway, she tosses a ball at a clown and wins a stuffed rabbit. The brief rhyming verses, while sometimes a bit forced, include a few onomatopoeic phrases that invite young listeners to join in. This clearly American celebration, replete with consumerism, comes to a satisfying conclusion: after a fireworks display, the family heads home with a sleepy child. “Light is fading. / Sunset red. / Parade is over. / It’s time for bed.” A sweet choice for storytime.
