Earthquakes. Caves. Drugs. Murder.
Sixteen-year-old Bodie McCann is on a youth-rehabilitation outing in the vast Ozarks of Arkansas when earthquakes rock the Mississippi River Valley. The adults are killed and Bodie finds himself stuck in the wilderness with four other troubled teens.
Bodie must draw on his survival skills, strength, and resourcefulness to deal with one obstacle after another in an attempt to escape the forest--and the other boys. Along the way, he discovers something about himself and a lot about.

After I finished writing my first novel, The Brute, I was searching for another story idea. I had traveled through the Ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas on family vacations, and decided to write about a boy lost in the woods. The Brute is about a Boy Scout on a disastrous campout in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Cracks is about five young juvenile delinquents on a rampage in the Ozarks of Arkansas. My experience growing up on a farm near Whitewater, Kansas and my years as Scoutmaster for my sons' Boy Scout Troop influenced much of the story. I had a great time writing Cracks, and I hope you enjoy it, too. For a limited time, a study guide for Cracks will be available on my website: mikeklaassen.com
Mike Klaassen is the author of Backlash: A War of 1812 Novel, Hansel and Gretel: The Brothers Grimm Story Told as a Novella, and two young-adult novels: Cracks and The Brute. He has also written Scenes and Sequels: How to Write Page-Turning Fiction and Fiction-Writing Modes: Eleven Essential Tools for Bringing Your Story to Life. Mike publishes For Fiction Writers, a free, monthly ezine about the craft of writing fiction.
