Synopsis

Detailed Solutions for Civil PE Exam Problems

Civil Engineering Solved Problems includes more than 370 problem scenarios representing a broad range of Civil PE exam topics. Each scenario’s associated problems demonstrate related concepts and allow you to apply your knowledge of relevant theory and equations. The breadth of topics covered and the varied problem complexities allow you to assess and strengthen your problem-solving skills, regardless of which afternoon depth exam you choose to take. Where applicable, problems and solutions also reference the exam’s design standards, so you can become familiar with and identify which will be most useful on exam day. For all problems, detailed step-by-step solutions illustrate accurate and efficient solving methods.

Due to the changes in codes for the 2015 NCEES PE exam, there are some updates to this edition. Though not all of PPI's products reflect the adopted editions of the new  design standards, in most cases the principles change very little. While specific procedures, equations, or values may change gradually from one edition of a design or reference standard to the next, PPI’s books continue to provide an appropriate overview of the design concepts presented, and will prepare you for the upcoming exams.

Civil Engineering Solved Problems will help you to:
  • effectively familiarize yourself with the exam topics
  • successfully connect relevant engineering theories to challenging problems
  • efficiently navigate through exam-adopted codes and standards
  • quickly identify accurate and efficient problem-solving approaches

This book is a collection of problems categorized by exam subject. Just as a fish is born knowing how to swim, you probably feel that you already know how to use this book. Actually, there are several ways to use it, and some of them are even pretty good. Only one way, however, will maximize the return on your investment in time.

At one end of the effort spectrum are people who will work through the book from beginning to end, studying every detail, duplicating every calculation, and making sure that they know the underlying subject. At the other end of the effort spectrum are people who will simply take the book into the exam with them hoping to find a similar problem whose solution they can copy.

Some will study using this book alone. Others will use this book in conjunction with the Civil Engineering Reference Manual. Some will go through this book from beginning to end, using it as a secondary review. Others will go in and out of it, alternating their time between this book and others.

Admittedly, when I wrote the book, I had a vision of how it would be used. I was pretty certain that most people would study a chapter from the Civil Engineering Reference Manual, solve all the homework problems in the companion book Practice Problems for the Civil Engineering PE Exam, and then turn to this book for addditional exposure to exam-level problems. Then they would return to their Reference Manual to study the next chapter.
