Practice Problems for the Environmental Engineering PE Exam
A Companion to the Environmental Engineering Reference Manual
Third Edition

Practice Problems for the Environmental Engineering PE Exam contains over 625 problems designed to reinforce your knowledge of the topics presented in the Environmental Engineering Reference Manual. Short, six-minute, multiple-choice problems follow the format of the NCEES Environmental PE exam and focus on individual engineering concepts. Longer, more complex problems challenge your skills in identifying and applying related engineering concepts.

Solutions are clearly written, complete, and easy to follow. U.S. customary and SI units are equally supported, and units are meticulously identified and carried through in all calculations. Frequent references to figures, tables, equations, and appendices in the Environmental Engineering Reference Manual will direct you to relevant support material.

How to Use This Book

This book is primarily a companion to the Environmental Engineering Reference Manual. As a collection of solved problems, there are a few, but not very many, ways to use it.

I envisioned this book (with its included problem statements) being taken to work, on the bus or train, on business trips, even on weekend pleasure getaways to the beach. I figured that it would “carry” a lot easier than the big Environmental Engineering Reference Manual, which I knew, before I started to write, would be a big book. Though I don’t think you’ll be taking this book on any backpacking trips, you might still find yourself working problems in the cafeteria during your lunch break.

The really big issue is whether you actually work the practice problems or not. Some people think they can read a problem statement, think about it for about ten seconds, read the solution, and then say “Yes, that’s what I was thinking of, and that’s what I would have done." Sadly, these people find out too late that the human brain doesn’t learn very efficiently that way. Under pressure, they find they know and remember little. For real learning, you have to spend some time with a stubby pencil.

There are so many places where you can get messed up solving a problem. Maybe it’s in the use of your calculator, like pushing log instead of ln, or forgetting to set the angle to radians instead of degrees, and so on. Maybe it’s rusty math.
