Yu-Jin Zhang received a Ph.D. from the State University of Liège, Belgium, in 1989. From 1989 to 1993, he was with the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. In 1993, he joined the Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, where he has been professor of image engineering since 1997. In 2003, he spent his sabbatical year as visiting professor at National Technological University, Singapore. He has published more than 200 research papers and 10 books including two monographs: Image Segmentation and Content-based Visual Information Retrieval (Science Press). He is the vice president of the China Society of Image and Graphics and the society’s director of academic committees. He is deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of Image and Graphics and associate editor of Pattern Recognition Letters. He was the program co-chair of the first and second International Conferences on Image and Graphics. He is also a senior member of IEEE.
