Synopsis

The third in the Now Read This series, Pearl & Cords's guide briefly describes and organizes approximately 500 of the most popular and current contemporary, mainstream fiction titles according to their primary appeal features-character, setting, language, and story. It also notes award-winning titles and those appropriate for book clubs; and it offers users suggestions for related reads. Focus is on titles published since 2000, and all annotations are new to this volume. This is the standard readers' advisory guide to mainstream fiction, and an essential tool for readers' advisors.

Reviews

Pearl returns with the third edition of her guide to literary and other mainstream fiction. Cords (The Real Story, 2006) provides able assistance this time, which particularly shows in enhanced coverage of related nonfiction reading. As with previous editions, Now Read This III divides books by appeal emphasis—setting, story, character, or language—providing citation, annotation, subject headings, awards, and, most importantly, the “Now Try” section, suggesting further reading for those who enjoy each of more than 500 listed books. This volume covers books published since 2002, with heavy emphasis on the last three years. Appendixes provide bridges to other genres, book award information, further resources, and advice for book groups, and everything is thoroughly indexed by author, title, and subject. Longer annotations also improve this edition, providing a stronger sense of each title. In the current publishing market, mainstream fiction sometimes gets lost in the genre whirlwind. Better than ever, this series will guide librarians and mainstream readers to promising titles. --Neil Hollands
