As a coach and a counselor, a sure sign that my client and I are creating a helpful relationship is often when he or she finds the courage to ask this question: Diane, do other people feel like I do? How will I ever get through this!?

At that moment, I know that I have been ushered into with the emotional side of the issue. And, after 15 years of working with clients of all ages and professions, I know the emotional side of an issue is often the most important. In golf and tennis, you call it managing the "mental game." In the chaos of career transition, I call it managing emotional unemployment (tm). There are countless books on how to write a resume or conduct an effective interview. Few books, if any, honor this complex, internal world of career transition. As a result, many people seem to feel alone and confused about the reactions that are common to both involuntary (You're fired!) as well as voluntary (I quit!) career changes. On the other side of the coin, I find when people do understand and find tools to manage these underpinnings of change, they can become more true to themselves, productive as well as inspired. This is why I decided to write Back In Control.
