Reviews

From the 3-D Exploration series, this large-format book offers a highly illustrated introduction to the solar system. Rather than the usual planet-by-planet tour with boxes of fast facts, the book combines a more general approach to the solar system with a few instances of more focused, detailed treatments. For example, Mars is mentioned twice on the double-page spread showing all the planets and in several sentences on the spread featuring the four inner planets. More detail is given in the “Landing on Mars” spread, which features a pop-up image of a Mars Rover ready for action, a paragraph of information, and 10 small, captioned pictures. Nicely designed, the book includes a good mix of photos and original illustrations. While students will prefer more traditional books for research, the five pop-up scenes give this one undeniable appeal for browsing. Grades 4-7. --Carolyn Phelan
