About the Author

RHEA TOPPING runs MayFly Adventures, an outfitter and fly-fishing school in her hometown of Upperville, Virginia. She achieved the Federation of Fly Fishing's Master Instruction designation in 1998, the second woman ever to do so. She has also taught at the Wulff School of Fly Fishing and the Mel Kreiger International Schools. She lives in Upperville, Virginia.

The movement unsettles the stream and the noise spooks the fish you were stalking. Does your anger end in rod rage? Has the stranger violated unwritten rules of etiquette that govern the sport? Master instructor Topping addresses such questions in this witty and wise collection about rules of the rod. Covering topics ranging from fishing salt-water flats to rules regarding boats, guides and international etiquette, she emphasizes that throughout history, civility and common sense have ruled the rod. Thus, in 1496 Dame Juliana Berners admonished anglers not to "fish in any poor man's private waters without his permission and his goodwill," while Topping's own dos and don'ts include "wade quietly and slowly in company" and "don't whoop and carry on when you hook a fish." Though somewhat repetitive (because the rules all boil down to courtesy), Topping's collection should serve as helpful, informative reading for avid anglers. Photos.

". . . angling solitude is liekly to be broken in minutes rather than days. On well-known waters, a traffic cop, rather than a game warden, seems more fitting. Even people new to the sport can share a horror story of some angler's deplorable manners. In short, the worst of today's highway behavior has been spilling over into the trout stream.
When I think of etiquette, the focus shifts from myself to my interactions with other people. Etiquette is synonymous with a social code, rules of conduct, and manners. It is the standard of what is socially acceptable in conduct as prescribed by authority or convention. Ultimately, it involves making a choice that honors another's rights as much as my own. Often today The Golden Rule seems to give way to another code--"Looking Out for Number One."
Etiquette is not that simple due to the fact that accepted guidelines vary with the waters and tactics one fishes; the acceptable spacing on a large river, for example, often constitutes crowding on a small stream."
