About the Author:

Sharon Shavers Gayle is an African-American writer and children's book editor. She grew up in Buffalo, New York, and was one of ten adopted children. She graduated from Vassar College and in addition to her work as an editor, she has written over fifteen children's books. Sharon remembers the legends attached to her childhood church, which was rumored to have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. She now lives in Jersey City, New Jersey with her husband and their cat, Zena.

Review:

One minute Emma is sketching tulips outside the Smithsonian's Anacostia Museum for African American History and the next minute she is on a 'fantasy field trip,' carried along to freedom in Canada on the Underground Railroad. The story begins and ends at the museum, but in the middle is a dramatic story of hiding in wells and wagons, feeling hungry and dirty and then hugging everyone at a family reunion on the side of freedom in Canada. In the full-page, full-color illustrations, it is especially worth noticing the powerful expressions of weariness and wariness, joy and fear. Eric Velasquez's paintings vividly capture the experience of being lowered into a well for hiding and worrying that slave trackers might hear a sound and remove the wall cover. This series makes important elements of American history approachable for younger audiences. There is a small glossary of words bolded in the text (Mason-Dixon line, slave trackers) and a short history of the Underground Railroad. Books in the Read-and-Discover series are published at three reading levels. The Level 3 books include 'fantasy field trips' to the pony express, the railroad and the moon.
