Listen in for a rousing discussion of George M. Cohan's "You're a Grand Old Flag." Did you know that he was inspired by a Civil War soldier and that the 1906 hit was the first to sell more than a million copies of sheet music? Interesting tidbits about the man and his music abound. Jim Mola narrates modestly, letting the composer, music, and lyrics take center stage. Mola's pacing is slow, and he gently underscores each new piece of information. This listening package provides opportunities for listening to the song with and without the words and for poring over the illustrations of Qi Wang. Review:
Most people are familiar with the song, "Grand Old Flag," but few know it was originally entitled "Grand Old Rag." This is one of several interesting facts found in this book/CD that looks at the classic song written by George M. Cohan in 1906 and its history. The books front cover shows a group of diverse children waving American flags. Most pages of the book feature a full-color illustration of a child taking part in an activity such as riding a bicycle and building a sand castle. The book concludes with "Notes and Nostalgia" about the history of the song and the songwriter, the sheet music, and the words to the entire song. A male narrator reads the text slowly and clearly and then sings "Grand Old Flag" with a group of children. This set is a great tool to teach youngsters the words to the song and its history. --School Library Journal
