The starkly innovative spiritual and educational approach of Rabbi Shimon Gershon Rosenberg (known as Rabbi Shagar) has shaped a generation of Israelis who yearn to encounter the Divine in a world progressively at odds with religious experience, nurturing religious faith within a cultural climate of corrosive skepticism. Possessing the rare ability to stare into the abyss of doubt with an unflinching gaze, Rabbi Shagar offers profound and often acutely personal insights that marry existentialist philosophy and Hasidism, Talmud and postmodernism. With a preface by Aryeh Rubin and an afterword by Rabbi Shalom Carmy. Edited by Rabbi Dr. Zohar Maor, Translated by Elie Leshem. Faith Shattered and Restored is the first authoritative attempt to introduce the English-speaking public to one of Israel's most creative and influential thinkers. These seminal essays set out a new path for preserving and cultivating Jewish spirituality in the twenty-first century and beyond.

Rabbi Shagar (Shimon Gershon Rosenberg, 1949-2007) was a trailblazing Israeli thinker and rosh yeshiva. Raised in Jerusalem, he studied at the Kerem B Yavneh Hesder Yeshiva and Yeshivat HaKotel. After recovering from severe injuries sustained in the Yom Kippur War when a missile hit his tank, he went on to teach in numerous institutions of higher Jewish learning. In 1997 he founded Yeshivat Siah Yitzhak and served as its rosh yeshiva until his untimely passing. His influence has grown steadily over the years as his students have published a series of books culled from the voluminous writings he left behind. An innovator in numerous areas, Rabbi Shagar developed new methods for teaching Talmud and combined kabbalistic and hasidic studies with contemporary thought. He is best known for his study of Judaism in light of postmodern philosophy. Rabbi Shagar sought to combine all aspects of Torah in an authentic, interdisciplinary approach, making Judaism accessible and uncovering its deep meaning and relevance in a postmodern world.
