Synopsis

FIRST PLACE WINNER - MIDWEST BOOK AWARDS!
Autobiography/Memoir Category

Here Comes the Sun
is the tale of a quest. It offers a clear and honest look at what happens when an illness throws life off track, and how a combination of science, love, and serendipity can help put things right. At the age of thirty-four, Betsy Lucas was diagnosed with late-stage leukemia. Without treatment she had only months to live. At the time her daughters were ten months old and three years old. Together, Betsy and her husband, Brian, started a journey through chemo, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. The path was far from steady, but with the help of countless supporters and a generous young man in Germany, they put one foot in front of the other, crossing days, months, and years off the calendar on the way to being cured. Here Comes the Sun isn't a cancer story--it s a love story.

Review

"Here Comes the Sun kept me on edge.  With complications seeming to crop up just when things were starting to look good, the book took me on a life-shaking emotional roller coaster.  Brian Lucas has written a beautiful story.  The strength and determination shown by Brian and Betsy, by their daughters and Betsy's mother, by their donor, and by all of the medical personnel involved has to be an inspiration to others going through this now."
-       Barbara Delinsky, New York Times bestselling author of Sweet Salt Air

"A heartfelt journey of family, love, ups and downs, and the shock of realities we face. Here Comes the Sun is a testament to the progress and limitations of medicine.  Most importantly, it provides a vision of hope and togetherness and the value of teams at all levels (family, friend, support, medical). This is why I love my job."
-       Dr. Jeffrey Miller, Hematologist/Oncologist, Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota

"As a clergyman, I have spent many hours with families who have wandered the wilderness of uncertainty and fear that is sickness.  Brian Lucas offers both a practical and a spiritual roadmap through that wilderness.  Here Comes the Sun is not only for families fighting cancer.  It is for all of us who might grow in our appreciation of the blessings of family and friends, love and life....And that is all of us."
-       Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson, Senior Rabbi, Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York

"Here Comes the Sun is a very personal and touching story of the journey thousands of patients and families take every year from diagnosis through survivorship.  Brian Lucas allows us to understand and feel the fear, anxiety and uncertainty that accompany the family throughout the journey. However and more importantly, he reinforces the essential elements of hope, family and friends in facing a life-threatening illness."
-       Dr. Jeffrey Chell, CEO, National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match

"Brian Lucas has written a powerful book about his wife Betsy's journey as a survivor of chronic myelogenous leukemia. This is a story of personal courage and of hope. The life lessons they share from Betsy's experience will inspire other blood cancer patients and families through their individual treatment journeys. All of us with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society are grateful for Brian and Betsy's generous support of the LLS mission and for sharing their story with us."
-       John Walter, President and CEO, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
