Grant made famous the expression "unconditional surrender," which is how most of his battles ended - for his opponents. A hard-drinking soldier in a hard-drinking army, he led the Federal armies to victory, forcing Robert E Lee to surrender the main Confederate army in 1865. Robin Neillands' concise biography takes us from Grant's disastrous pre-war record to his sudden emergence as a general of genius. This is a study of an uncommon commander in a time of great peril. About the Author
Robin Neillands served in 45 Commando Royal Marines during the 1950s. He now works as a journalist and travel writer and has a growing reputation as a military historian. He has published many books on British military history from the Napoleonic era through to the Second World War.
