Lawrence Pressman is one of those actors highly regarded in Hollywood as a reliable guest artist on TV and recognized outside "the business" hardly at all. He has a special love of audio, as apparent from his performances with L.A. Theatre Works and, especially, this aural explication of Fitzgerald's celebrated Jazz Age novel. His mild, liquid sound is full of élan and enthusiasm. His rendition of excerpts from the book makes one want to hear him read the whole thing. His reading of the analysis is particularly intelligent and expressive, albeit a touch hammy. He is well abetted by Richard Glatzer, a film writer and director, whose lean, colorful text reflects an aficionado's rather than an academic's study of the fictional bootlegger-bon vivant and his Long Island pals.
