Jessie Mercer has it all--fame, fortune, and a best selling novel being made into a major motion picture starring the alluring Taylor Andrews. When disturbing, real-life events begin mimicking the movie's plot, Jessie and Taylor find themselves drawn into a unforeseen web of passion, treachery, and deception that uncovers secrets and betrayals of a distant past.
As the terror mounts, Jessie realizes she is the target and must go back--all the way back to the Salem Witch Trials, where answers to the mystery unfold--before the evil from the past destroys both of them.
From Los Angeles to colonial America, the search for secrets is captivating and filled with old intrigue in this Lambda Literary finalist for best lesbian mystery. Originally published by Alice Street Editions of Haworth Press.

"Back to Salem" is a very personal story to me. Like my protagonist, Jessie Mercer, while I was writing my first novel, "Facades," I started seeing echoes of my story in my own life. It was this experience that gave me the idea of having a precognitive novelist as the protagonist, only Jessie's precognition is revealed as her life starts to mimic one of her bestselling mysteries, including a murder.
When I began writing, I tapped a fresh and innovative way to access my creativity. At some point I learned to embrace it, and used it to help develop the plots of my stories. I do believe there is no coincidence that after I wrote the first draft of this novel, I learned that one of my characters had the same name, lived in the same town and was brought to trial in the same month and year as one of the actual accused in the Salem Witch Trials.
This book was originally published in 2001. There was one thing that bothered me over the years about the book, which is why there is a change to the ending. It's a very slight change, yet very powerful. It has to do with redemption.
I hope you enjoy the tale.
Alex Marcoux won a Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers' Pen Award for her first novel, Facades. She is currently working on the sequel to BACK TO SALEM, another paranormal mystery featuring Jessie Mercer. BACK TO SALEM is a Lamda Literary Award finalist for Best Lesbian Mystery.
