In a world much like ours, 16-year-old Tessa is a Variant, a person with special abilities, such as invisibility and mind reading. Tessa’s variation is unusual; she can absorb a person’s DNA by touching them and then shape-shift into a perfect replica at will. Tessa, a member of the FEA (Forces of Extraordinary Abilities, a branch of the FBI), trains with other Variants to hone their respective skills. Unexpectedly, Tessa is assigned to an investigation into a string of murders in the tiny town of Livingston, Oregon. The latest victim, a teenager named Madison, is near death. Tessa’s job will be to impersonate a “recovered” Madison and search for clues to her attacker. Assisted by her true-but-unattainable love, Alec, Tessa discovers that Madison kept many secrets, at least one of which proved dangerous. There is more emphasis on fast action than character development, and brisk pacing sweeps readers through the search for the killer. As in a superhero comic, the romance is a touch melodramatic, special powers are key to solving the mystery, and the final pages smack of a sequel.
