When the promotional material for the second volume of a manga series begins, "Wondering just what the heck is going on?" you know you're in trouble. It's a shame that the first volume of Chrono Code plunges readers into such confusion, because it has real potential. Ji-Soo Chung is an orphaned schoolgirl in search of her missing younger brother in Seoul, Korea, in 1994. But in the 23rd century she may be Yun-hee, a "chronoid" with time-traveling capabilities and a colleague of the swash-buckling Blade (who, in 1994, is Ji-Soo's Russian teacher, Professor Nicolai). Blade's search for Yun-hee, who is apparently a powerful time traveler, overlaps with his pursuit of Doctor Joseph, another chronoid who has changed the confidential code for a satellite called Riverside that has the power to stop an apocalyptic 23rd-century war. It's fair to say that Chrono Code is suffering from an overabundance of plot and a dearth of background. But its art is lovely, combining fight scenes with dreamy splash pages, and the story is intriguing, despite a sometimes clunky translation. Manga fans who have the patience to follow the meandering plot should enjoy what they find. (Aug.)

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Volume 2 is a prequel to volume 1. The great Armageddon war has been fought and most of the world is destroyed. Out of the ruins, rise four federations/countries: the African Federation, the American Federation, European/Russian Federation, and the Australian/Asian Federation. The European/Russian Federation and the Australian/Asian Federation wage a war against each other. However, the E/R Federation is far more powerful because they have the chronoid technology. Blade and Valeria are 'chronoids' developed by the E/R Federation. The A/A Federation are constantly trying to steal and develop the chronoid technology. In order to develop a chronoid, you need to have a perfect match of the 'chronoid G' and human speciman. Yun-hee and Yun-woo were adopted by "fake parents" so that they can be used as human guinea pigs to develop the chronoid technology for the A/A Federation. Much advancement was made in the chronoid technology in the A/A Federation. However, their development has many flaws. Blade first encounters Yun-hee/Ji-soo when he and Valeria are sent to destroy the development of this technology. She and her brother are drugged and held captive in a prison cell. After Blade destroys the entire development complex and the people involved, he sets Yun-hee and Yun-woo free from prison. Yun-hee and Yun-woo have nowhere to go, so they are forced to roam the streets. Meanwhile in the E/R Federation, a man named Hades is causing havoc and mayhem. Blade and Valeria are dispatched to stop him. It turns out that Hades was friends with Blade. Hades is bitter because he wanted to be a chronoid as well. However, if the chronoid procedure is unsuccessful, then the human is killed. The chronoid procedure was unsuccessful on Hades, but he managed to escape. Angry with the E/R Federation, he betrays his country and steals chronoid information for the A/A Federation. Hades and an A/A agent have a meeting to hand over the chronoid info. The A/A agent is none other than Han-young. He is a spy for the A/A Federation. Ironically, the meeting place and Yun-hee's home is in the same place. Forced to live as beggars, Yun-hee and her brother are caught by the police stealing food. Yun-hee is forced to display her powers to help Yun-woo escape from a police officer. Han-young and Hades witness Yun-hee's incredible powers and realize that she is a chronoid. Realizing that Yun-hee could be invaluable to the A/A Federation, Han-young rescues Yun-hee from the streets. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
