Unlike many recent picture-book versions of Goldilocks’ story, nothing is fractured in this entry in the QEB Storytime Classics series, which also includes Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty (all 2010). Like the smoothly paced text, Merz’s pencil-and-paint illustrations cleave closely to traditional versions, from the rough-hewn coziness of the bears’ cottage to curly-locked Goldi herself. Merz amplifies the fun with visual exaggerations, as in scenes of Goldilocks laid out like a tense pancake on Papa Bear’s rock-hard mattress and then sinking into oblivion on Mama Bear’s feathery bed.
